What’s the exhibition about

From October 20 to December 10, 2023, the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) space in Lower Manhattan will host the State of Emergence exhibition of Ukrainian and international artists, as reported by the Romanian gallery Catinca Tabacaru.

The exhibition features artworks from Alaa Mansour, Anatoliy Belov, Borys Kashapov, Katia Lesiv, Katia Lysovenko, Katya Grokhovsky, Ksenia Hnylytska, Lesia Vasylchenko, Luba Drozd, Maria Kulikovska, Nikita Kadan, Nona Inescu, Oksana Kazmina, Palliative Turn, Rachel Monosov, Slinko, Terrence Musekiwa, Yulia Krivich, Xavier Robles de Medina, and UKRAïNATV. Curators: Lesia Kulchynska (Ukraine) and Catinca Tabacaru (Romania).

Starting from the war, waged by Russia against Ukraine, curators Lesia Kulchynska and Catinca Tabacaru focus on ongoing emergencies around the globe and their possible techno-driven futures, proposing the consideration of empowering alliances between those who have lived through, or are still living in, these states. The exhibition places artists from Europe, Lebanon, Suriname, the United States, and Zimbabwe in conversation with Ukrainian artists. The exhibition is organized under the Ukrainian Institute’s Visualize program.

«State of Emergence welcomes viewers with the presence of strange and dangerous creatures: the Dancing Rubble by Slinko personifies in absurdity the destruction of war; while The Siren, a painting by Nikita Kadan reverberates with the seduction of death… Alaa Mansour explores AI’s hallucinations of digital domination, while the art streaming collective UKRAïNATV invites viewers to surrender to the intoxicating messiness of being together in the digital trenches of the ongoing cyberwar,» the announcement says.

The opening of the State of Emergence exhibition in New York will take place on October 20, 2023 at 18:00. At this time, the first curatorial tour will begin.

Later, the team will host:

— a lecture-performance «Contemporary History of Ukraine. Feast of Life» by Oksana Kazmina (October 22, 14:00);
— performative talks by Alaa Mansour and Lesia Vasylchenko called «Chronosphere and hallucinatory machines» (October 22, 16:00);
— artist talk with Lyuba Drozd (October 25, 18:30);
— performance «Death and humor»: conversation with Slinko and performative presentation of Palliative Turn Magazine with Olav Westphalen (November 24).

What’s known about the project

The New York exhibition is the third chapter of the joint project of Lesya Kulchynska and Catinca Tabakaru State of Emergence. The first exhibition in the series opened at Bucharest's Catinca Tabacaru gallery just 50 days after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. It brought together thirteen Ukrainian artists who presented their first reactions and emotional impressions of the new reality of war. Kateryna Aliinyk, Katya Buchatska, Dasha Chechushkova, Zhanna Kadyrova, Borys Kashapov, Maria Kulikovska, Katia Libkind, Kateryna Lysovenko, Roman Mykhailov, Stas Turina, Tamara Turliun, Vitaliy Yankovy, and Max Zatsarinny took part in it.

In the second exhibition in the State of Emergence series — FOG at the Sandwich Gallery in Bucharest — five Ukrainian artists showed personal and collective histories erased by Russia's colonial violence over the past centuries. Dasha Chechushkova, Diana Khailova, Borys Kashapov, Olena Pronkina and Uliana Shchabel took part in it.
